One dials several numbers at once for one rep; the other dials one at a time. Which is right depends almost entirely on how many calls you make a day.
A power dialer calls one number at a time for each rep, advancing automatically down a list when a call ends. A parallel dialer calls several numbers at once for the same rep and connects only the first live answer. The power dialer removes manual dialing; the parallel dialer removes waiting. Neither changes your connect rate.

That is the whole distinction, and it is worth holding onto because most vendor comparisons bury it. With a power dialer your rep still hears every ring, every voicemail greeting and every disconnected tone — they just do not have to type the number or click the next record. With a parallel dialer the rep hears none of that; the system listens on several lines at once and passes through only a human.
Both are automatic. Only one of them gives your rep the time back.

When the power dialer wins

When the parallel dialer wins
Above roughly 60 dials a day the arithmetic inverts. At a 10% connect rate, nine in ten dials produce nothing but 20–30 seconds of a rep’s attention, and a power dialer makes the rep sit through all of it. That is most of the working hour spent on hold for nobody.
Parallel dialing removes it. The connect rate does not change — that is a property of your data and your caller ID reputation — but the number of dials behind it does, and conversations per hour rise with it.
The trade you accept is two new failure modes that a power dialer does not have: dead air while the system decides whether a human answered, and the possibility of dropping a call when two people answer at once. Both are manageable and neither is zero. Any vendor who tells you their parallel dialer has no dead air and never drops a call is describing a power dialer.
The costs they do not advertise
Parallel dialing needs a pool of phone numbers where a power dialer needs very few. Volume from one number trains carriers to flag it; flagged numbers do not recover quickly, so teams rotate across several and replace the burned ones. Vendors that meter numbers charge roughly $10–15 each per month, and the category provisions around ten per rep — a running cost of the same order as the seat itself.
Some bundle it. Orum includes up to ten caller IDs a month in the seat, Trellus bundles eight on its Parallel plan, Salesfinity publishes ten. Others sell it as an add-on. It is the line item most likely to be missing from whatever comparison brought you here.
