The outbound dialing glossary

34 terms that decide how a cold-calling operation actually performs — the dialer types, the metrics, the telephony that gets your calls answered, and the rules that govern all of it.

Dialing

Parallel dialer

A parallel dialer places several outbound calls at once for a single rep, screens out voicemail, answering machines and dead numbers automatically, and connects the rep to the first call a human answers. The remaining calls are dropped.

Power dialer

A power dialer calls one number at a time for each rep, advancing automatically to the next record when a call ends. It removes manual dialing and list navigation, but the rep still hears every ring, voicemail greeting and disconnected tone.

Predictive dialer

A predictive dialer places calls on behalf of a pool of agents, using an algorithm to dial ahead of who is available on the assumption that most calls will go unanswered. It is a call-centre instrument, and it is what the FTC’s abandoned-call rules were written for.

Progressive dialer

A progressive dialer places the next call only once a rep is confirmed free, one line at a time. It behaves almost identically to a power dialer and, like one, abandons no calls — the difference is that availability triggers the dial rather than the previous call ending.

Auto dialer

Auto dialer is the umbrella term for any system that places calls without a person entering the number. Power, progressive, parallel and predictive dialers are all auto dialers; the word describes the category rather than any particular architecture.

Answering machine detection (AMD)

Answering machine detection is the classification step that decides whether a live person or a recording answered a call. It is what allows a dialer to drop voicemails automatically and to bridge a rep only on human answers — and its speed is what determines how much dead air the prospect hears.

Voicemail drop

A voicemail drop leaves a pre-recorded message on an answering machine without the rep speaking or waiting for the beep. The dialer detects the machine, plays the recording, and moves the rep on — turning a 30-second dead end into no rep time at all.

Call disposition

A call disposition is the coded outcome recorded against a dial — connected, voicemail, no answer, wrong number, bad data, meeting booked. It is the field every downstream number is computed from, and the one most often filled in inconsistently.

Metrics

Connect rate

Connect rate is the share of dials that reach a live human. Published 2026 benchmarks put US B2B connect rates at roughly 8–12% on generic data and 18–22% on verified mobile direct dials. It is a property of your data and caller ID reputation, not of your dialer.

Answer rate

Answer rate is the share of dials where the call is picked up by anything at all — a person, a receptionist, an answering machine. It sits above connect rate, which counts only live humans, and the gap between the two is mostly voicemail.

Abandonment rate

Abandonment rate is the share of calls answered by a person that fail to reach a representative in time. Under 16 CFR 310.4(b)(1)(iv) a call is abandoned if a person answers and is not connected to a sales representative within two seconds of their completed greeting.

Contact rate

Contact rate is the share of people on a list who are reached at least once, rather than the share of dials that connect. It measures list coverage over a campaign, where connect rate measures efficiency per attempt.

Dials per hour

Dials per hour is the count of outbound attempts a rep makes in an hour of calling. Single-line dialing typically produces 25–40; parallel dialing produces 80–200 or more. It is the metric a dialer actually changes.

Talk time

Talk time is the total minutes a rep spends in live conversation, distinct from time spent dialing, waiting or leaving voicemails. It is the closest single number to what a cold-calling hour is actually for.

Dial-to-meeting rate

Dial-to-meeting rate is the share of dials that produce a booked meeting. It is far smaller than most quoted figures suggest: Belkins measured about one meeting per 370 dials across 175,000+ dials, and SkipCall’s worked funnel implies about one per 100. Anything near a few percent is almost always a per-conversation rate being read as a per-dial one.

Telephony

Caller ID reputation

Caller ID reputation is the score carriers and call-blocking apps assign to a phone number based on how it behaves — call volume, answer rates, call durations and user complaints. A poor score gets calls labelled, filtered or silently blocked before anyone chooses to answer.

Spam likely

"Spam Likely" is the label a carrier or handset applies to an incoming call it believes is unwanted. It is applied by the network rather than by the recipient, and once a number carries it, answer rates collapse regardless of who is actually calling.

Number rotation

Number rotation distributes outbound calls across a pool of phone numbers so that no single number carries enough volume to be flagged as spam. It is the standard defence against caller ID burn, and it is why parallel dialing needs a pool rather than a number.

Local presence

Local presence dialing displays a caller ID with the same area code as the person being called, on the premise that a local number is more likely to be answered than an unfamiliar one. It requires holding numbers across every area code you dial into.

Branded caller ID

Branded caller ID displays a verified company name, and sometimes a logo, alongside the number on the recipient’s handset. It is the constructive counterpart to spam labelling — instead of hiding behind a local number, the call identifies itself.

STIR/SHAKEN

STIR/SHAKEN is the framework US carriers use to cryptographically attest that a call is coming from the number it claims. Calls are signed with an attestation level — A, B or C — and low attestation contributes to a call being labelled or blocked.

A2P 10DLC

A2P 10DLC is the US registration regime for application-to-person messaging sent from ordinary ten-digit long codes. It governs SMS rather than voice, and it requires registering the brand and each campaign before messages are reliably delivered.

SIP trunk

A SIP trunk is the connection that carries voice calls between a dialer and the public telephone network over the internet. Dedicated trunking means a team’s traffic is not sharing infrastructure — and therefore not sharing reputation — with other customers.

DID (direct inward dial)

A DID is an individual phone number routed directly to a specific destination rather than through a switchboard. In outbound dialing, DID is the technical term for each number in a rotation pool — the unit that is provisioned, metered and, eventually, burned.

Dead air

Dead air is the silence a prospect hears between saying "hello" and a rep being connected. It is produced by the time a dialer takes to classify the answer, and it is the single clearest signal to the person answering that they are on an automated call.
