Dialing

Auto dialer

Auto dialer is the umbrella term for any system that places calls without a person entering the number. Power, progressive, parallel and predictive dialers are all auto dialers; the word describes the category rather than any particular architecture.

The term carries baggage — it is associated with robocalling and the consumer-nuisance end of telephony — so B2B vendors tend to avoid it even when it applies to what they sell, while contact-centre vendors use it as their category page. The same product is frequently described both ways depending on who is selling.

For a B2B team deciding what to buy, searching "auto dialer" returns contact-centre software built for inbound queues and consumer campaigns. The useful terms are power dialer for one line per rep and parallel dialer for several.
