Power dialer vs. auto dialer

One of these is a category and the other is a member of it. The confusion is mostly vendors using the broader word for the narrower thing.

"Auto dialer" is the umbrella term for any system that dials numbers without a person entering them — power, progressive, predictive and parallel dialers are all auto dialers. A power dialer is one specific kind: one line per rep, dialed automatically, advancing down a list as each call ends.

Category and member

There is no meaningful "power dialer vs auto dialer" choice to make, because a power dialer is an auto dialer. The question people are actually asking when they search this is which kind of automatic dialing they need, and that has a real answer.

The confusion is worth naming because it is manufactured. "Auto dialer" carries baggage — it is the term attached to robocalling and to the consumer-nuisance end of the industry — so B2B vendors avoid it and use the narrower word even when the broad one applies. Meanwhile call-centre vendors use "auto dialer" as their category page. The same product can be described either way depending on who is selling it.

The four kinds

Under the umbrella, four architectures that differ in one variable: how many lines are opened, and for whom.

LinesOpened forAbandons calls?
Power dialerOne per repThat repNo
Progressive dialerOne, on rep availabilityThat repNo
Parallel dialerTwo to eight per repThat repPossible — two answers, one rep
Predictive dialerMany, ahead of availabilityA pool of agentsBy design, managed to 3%

Power dialer vs. predictive dialer

Of the four, these two are the opposite ends of the umbrella, which is why power dialer vs. predictive dialer is the comparison people ask for most once they know the category exists. A power dialer opens one line for one rep and waits for that call to end before placing the next. A predictive dialer opens many lines for a floor of agents and dials ahead of who is free, using a model of how many calls will go unanswered.

That single difference decides everything else. Because a power dialer never places a call there is nobody to take, it cannot abandon one — that is arithmetic, not a setting. A predictive dialer abandons calls by design and manages the rate down: the FTC’s Telemarketing Sales Rule sets a safe harbour at no more than three percent of calls answered by a person, with ring-time and recorded-message conditions attached (16 CFR 310.4(b)(4)). Every predictive deployment is a bet run against that ceiling.

The practical reading of predictive dialer vs. power dialer for a B2B sales team is that the predictive end is built for a different job. It assumes an agent floor deep enough for the model to average over, and lists long enough that a few percent of answers meeting silence is an accepted cost of the campaign. A team of six reps working named accounts has neither. Pharo is deliberately not a predictive dialer for that reason — we open lines for one named rep who is already waiting, which is the parallel model, and the abandonment question that comes with it is laid out in the parallel dialer vs. predictive dialer guide.

Which term to search for

If you are a B2B sales team deciding what to buy, "auto dialer" will return call-centre software priced and built for a different job — inbound queues, agent floors, consumer campaigns. The terms that return the right category are power dialer for one line per rep and parallel dialer for several.

If you are trying to work out which you need, the dividing line is volume: roughly 60 dials a day. Below it, a power dialer is the better tool and abandons nothing. Above it, waiting through ringing and voicemail dominates the rep’s hour and parallel dialing is what removes it. That comparison is laid out in full in the parallel dialer vs. power dialer guide.

Common questions

Is a power dialer an auto dialer?

Yes. "Auto dialer" is the umbrella term for any system that dials numbers without a person entering them, and power, progressive, parallel and predictive dialers are all auto dialers. A power dialer is the specific kind that opens one line per rep and advances down a list automatically.

What is the difference between a power dialer and a progressive dialer?

Very little in practice. Both open one line per rep and neither abandons calls. A progressive dialer places the next call only when a rep is confirmed free, which makes it marginally faster in a floor setting; the terms are often used interchangeably in B2B sales tools.

What kind of dialer do B2B sales teams use?

Power dialers below roughly 60 dials a day per rep, parallel dialers above it. Predictive dialers are largely a call-centre instrument for consumer campaigns, and searching for "auto dialer" tends to return that class of software rather than B2B sales tooling.

What is the difference between a power dialer and a predictive dialer?

A power dialer opens one line for one rep and places the next call only when the last one ends, so it never calls someone there is nobody to answer for. A predictive dialer opens many lines for a pool of agents and dials ahead of who is free, using a model of how many calls will go unanswered — which means it abandons some calls by design and manages the rate against the FTC safe harbour of three percent of calls answered by a person (16 CFR 310.4(b)(4)). Power dialing is a per-rep tool; predictive dialing is a call-centre one. Whether the rule reaches your calls is a question for your counsel.

This is a plain-English summary of a published rule, not legal advice. Whether the Telemarketing Sales Rule covers your calls depends on facts about your business and who you are calling, and that is a question for your counsel rather than for a dialer vendor.
