A power dialer calls one number at a time for each rep, advancing automatically to the next record when a call ends. It removes manual dialing and list navigation, but the rep still hears every ring, voicemail greeting and disconnected tone.
A power dialer automates dialing; a parallel dialer automates waiting. That is the entire distinction, and it decides which one a team should buy: below roughly 60 dials a day per rep, waiting is not yet the bottleneck and a power dialer is the better instrument.
It has two structural advantages that no multi-line system can match. It never abandons a call — there is exactly one line per rep, so there is never an answered call with nobody to take it. And it introduces no dead air, because there is nothing to classify; the rep is already on the line as it rings.
It also needs very few phone numbers, where parallel dialing needs a rotating pool. PhoneBurner is the best-known dedicated example and does not offer parallel dialing at any price.
