Answering machine detection (AMD)

Also called: AMD, Machine detection

Answering machine detection is the classification step that decides whether a live person or a recording answered a call. It is what allows a dialer to drop voicemails automatically and to bridge a rep only on human answers — and its speed is what determines how much dead air the prospect hears.

Detection works on the audio of the greeting: timing, cadence, length and the presence of a beep. A human "hello?" is short and rises; a voicemail greeting is longer and follows a script. The system has to decide in the fraction of a second before a real person expects a reply.

Every implementation trades accuracy against latency. Wait longer and you classify more reliably but leave the prospect in silence; decide faster and you occasionally bridge a rep to a recording, or drop a voicemail on a person. Ask a vendor for its detection time in milliseconds and its false-positive rate — the two numbers describe the trade, and quoting one without the other tells you nothing.
