A voicemail drop leaves a pre-recorded message on an answering machine without the rep speaking or waiting for the beep. The dialer detects the machine, plays the recording, and moves the rep on — turning a 30-second dead end into no rep time at all.
The saving is larger than it looks. Voicemail is the most common outcome of a cold dial, and leaving one manually costs the rep the greeting, the beep, the message and the hang-up. Dropping it costs nothing and the message is identical every time, which also makes it testable.
The trade is that a dropped voicemail is obviously pre-recorded to anyone listening closely, and a rep can no longer tailor the message to what the greeting revealed. Some teams route named accounts to manual voicemail for that reason.
