Data waterfall

A data waterfall queries enrichment providers in sequence until one returns a usable result, rather than relying on a single vendor. It raises coverage because no provider has complete data, and it makes cost per usable record the metric that matters rather than cost per lookup.

Coverage varies enormously by provider, by geography and by seniority, and the variation is not consistent — the provider that is best for US mid-market operations roles is frequently not the best for European engineering leaders. A waterfall exploits that by asking the cheapest plausible source first and escalating only on a miss.

The economics depend on what a miss costs. Where providers bill per lookup regardless of result, a waterfall multiplies spend on the hardest records; where they bill only for hits, it is close to free to add another step. Ask any vendor which model each of its providers is on, and whether the cost you see is theirs or marked up.
