DID (direct inward dial)

Also called: Direct inward dialing

A DID is an individual phone number routed directly to a specific destination rather than through a switchboard. In outbound dialing, DID is the technical term for each number in a rotation pool — the unit that is provisioned, metered and, eventually, burned.

When a vendor prices "numbers" at $10–15 each per month, DIDs are what is being counted. Local presence multiplies them by area code and rotation multiplies them again, which is how a line item that looks trivial per unit becomes comparable to the software seat.

Not to be confused with a direct dial in the sales-data sense, which means a prospect’s own number rather than their company switchboard. The abbreviation is the same shape and the meanings are unrelated.
