Metrics

Answer rate

Answer rate is the share of dials where the call is picked up by anything at all — a person, a receptionist, an answering machine. It sits above connect rate, which counts only live humans, and the gap between the two is mostly voicemail.

How it is measured

Answered calls ÷ dials. Whether answering machines count as answered varies by system, which is why answer rate and connect rate are frequently confused and why cross-vendor comparisons of it are unreliable.

The metric is worth watching for one reason: it is the earliest indicator of caller ID damage. A flagged number produces a falling answer rate before anyone notices a falling meeting count, because carriers begin labelling or silently filtering the call before a human ever chooses whether to pick up.

Track it per caller ID rather than per rep. Aggregated across a pool it hides exactly the signal it is useful for — one burned number in a pool of ten drags the average slightly and looks like noise, while the number itself has effectively stopped working.

It is also the metric to watch when changing anything about how calls are placed: a new provider, a new trunk, a new area code strategy. Connect rate and meeting rate move too slowly to attribute, but answer rate responds within days.
